3 Italian Cloth
This is made from cotton warp and botany weft, in the Bradford district. The warp is yam dyed black and the woven piece cross-dyed. The weave is a weft face satin very heavily picked to give an even smooth surface. After finishing the cloth has a beautiful and lasting gloss. A and B in the subjoined table give typical makes. A very large trade is done in all cotton Italians piece-dyed black, and made in many widths and qualities, 5-shaft sateen weave, weft face. Standard makes of cotton Italians are given at C, D, E -

5 Alepine
A fine dress twill made in Aleppo from soft spun silk warp and fine worsted weft. Usually dyed black, but at times in colours. The cloth known by this name of Yorkshire make is of all worsted yarns. In the 18th century a serge twill of English make had this name, it was made of a silk warp and worsted weft and piece-dyed black. A variety had mohair weft. It was used for mourning wear. -
6 Grenadine
This is a dress material with an open gauze weave. Made from hard-twisted yarns; cotton, silk and wool are made use of in the many qualities on the market. Yarns are dyed and of many colours. Stripes and checks are formed by cramming, and open spaces by leaving dents empty. The weft in the cotton variety is polished yarn, dyed black. The warp is hard-twisted voile yarn, 2/40's, 2/80's, or 2/100's. This cloth is also known as Black Lenos." The example illustrated is a good style of this cloth made from 32's polished weft. The open work is obtained by empty dents, with gauze or leno at each side of the stripes to keep them together. Silk and coloured cotton is used to add extra ornament. -

9 Albatros
A fineall-wool light-weight dress fabric in an open fancy weave. Good quality worsted yarns are used. A crepe effect due to spiral twist in the yarns is obtained. The cloth is piece-dyed in cream, tan and other light shades. It is soft enough for infants' wear. Also applied to a plain woven cotton cloth of soft fine yarns, piece-dyed black and other solid colours, used for decorations, such as 84 X 90, 60's/64's, super-combed Egyptian yarns. The cloth has a short nap face. Known also as "Satin Moss", "Vienna", "Snowflake" and "Llama Croise". The Snowflake has flecked yarn and the Vienna is the heaviest variety. -
10 Albert Twill
A Bradford dress or lining fabric in 4-shaft twill weave, made from a cotton warp and alpaca weft, 33-in. 90 yards, 72 X 100, 44's / 36's T.W. weft alpaca, usually 72 reed, but picks vary from 80 to 140. Warp varies from 36's to 44's cotton dyed black and the weft from 32's to 40's alpaca. Albert Twill - The cloth sold under this name in America is woven 1 X 3 twill to the right (see design) 35 fin., 64 X 72, 30's / 30's, all cotton. The weft always predominates - used for cheap linings and dyed all colours -
11 Broadcloth
Given to an all-cotton cloth used for many dress purposes, bleached, dyed and printed 35-in./90 yards 124 X 64 per inch, 36's/40's yarns, 22-lb. plain weave. Better qualities have two-fold warp or two-fold warp and weft, generally 2/80's Egyptian, which greatly resemble Lancashire poplins. ———————— A term that in many districts was used to indicate garments worn by the clergy. It is a stout wool cloth. Made from fine merino yarns, and heavily milled and - finished with a dress face. It has a velvety feel and a silky gloss. A 90-in. in the loom gives 56-in. finished. One quality is made 32 X 40 per inch, from 26 skeins warp and weft. Dyed black or indigo. Another type is made from West of England woollen yams in very wide widths, and shrunk during finish about 33 per cent. Woven 2 X 1 twill. Quality varies according to price. It is a superfine, smooth-faced and dense fabric, and considered the perfection in woollen materials. -
12 Cashmere Cloth
A large trade is done in cotton cashmeres, which are generally dyed black, although colours are sometimes shown. The following are standard makes: - 56-in. full, 90 yards, 52 X 140, 36's/28's, 43-lb.; 41-in. full, 90 yards, 80 X 104, 36's/40's; 221/2-in. full, 90 yards, 78 X 114, 32's/28's, 25-lb. The weave is 2 X 1 twill, and super weft is used. Another cashmere is made with a cotton warp, which is printed before weaving, and either cotton or wool weft. Used for dress purposes. About 68 X 132, 2/60's cotton, 56's botany. The name is obtained from the Cashmere goat, whose wool was first used to make cashmeres. This wool cashmere is still made in Yorkshire. Such as 56-in., 68 X 140, 54's/18's worsted. A cashmere made for China with a few ends of coloured worsted at each selvedge is known as " Worsted Border Cashmere." A standard quality is made 36-in., 120 yard, 54 X 104, 36's/28's, 12 ends worsted each side. The cloth is dyed and has a special lustrous finish. 13 Lastings
A very stout twill cloth woven with hard-twisted yarns, generally cotton all through, although wool is sometimes used. It is used chiefly for boot and bag linings when of the twill weave. This style of cloth when figured is used for church furniture. When dyed and of plain weave it is shipped to parts of South America as " Las tings " usually with a stiff glaze finish, and used as trouserings by the natives. Made in various widths and qualities. A popular quality is 24-in., 64 ends and 60 picks per inch, 20's warp, 24's weft. A mixture cloth is made in the five-end satin weave, with 104 ends and 68 picks per inch, 2/50's worsted warp and 16's or 24's cotton weft. The term originally meant a woollen fabric made of combed wool, having two- or three-fold warp and single weft, made 18-in. wide and dyed black. -
14 Leather Cloth
A kind of melton fabric, woven with cotton warp, two ends as one, and wool weft, plain weave, and generally dyed black or very dark grey. Made principally in Yorkshire with very heavy yarns, and is a cheap type of melton cloth. ———————— A fabric made from cotton to imitate leather in appearance. After being dyed and shrunk the cloth is passed through spreading machines which apply a nitro-cellulose coloured paste. If necessary several coats of paste may be applied. The fabric is then dried, the solvents evaporated, and finally embossed to simulate the grain of leather, etc. -
15 Lustre Cloths
These are unions of cotton and wool - usually cotton warp and Alpaca, mohair, or other lustre wool weft. Such fabrics as alpacas, Brilliantines, Glaces, Sicilians, etc., are lustres. A typical lustre cloth is made plain weave 50-in. wide, 40 ends and 48 picks per inch, 2/80's dyed cotton warp and 16's mohair weft. Reeded one end in a dent. The warp is dyed black. This cloth is a Sicilian. -
16 Pony Skin
A pile fabric made in imitation of the Russian pony skin fur. Piece-dyed black. Made 50-in. wide with a two-fold super quality dyed cotton warp, and mohair pile weft. -
17 Queen Silk
A very soft all-silk fabric of the chiffon type, both yarn and piece-dyed in widths from 21-in. to 36-in. Usually dyed black. Made in England during the 18th century. -
18 Sjong
Plain velvet from Amoy, China, dyed black, usually 22-in. wide and 57/8 yards long. Also means a blue dyed velvet from Nanking. -
19 Coatings
A heavy drill cloth, woven in the 3 X 1 weave, and dyed black with a glossy finish. Variety is obtained by introducing the satin weave and cords in length-wise stripes, and small spots. Qualities vary up to 130 ends and 68 picks. A typical make is 29-in. wide, 92/48 per inch, 2/32's T., 20's W. Another make is 48-in. splits, 116/48 per inch, 28's T., 12's W.
